Context is very helpful. And while my French may not really be serviceable, I do still remember the days of the week, and things like how to conjugate "avoir" and "ĂȘtre".
French is taught in grades 4 through 8 (though I was in the last class that got taught all the way from grade 1), and required in grade 9. Beyond that, it's optional. Now, I did take French all the way to the end of high school, but our school system kind of sucks at teaching second languages, and I probably couldn't have used it for much, even right when I graduated. I always wanted to be able to use it though, so I'm working on improving it.
