Carla's Necklace
Bingo Square: Mental or spiritual distress
Genre: Fiction
"I can't find it. Where the hell did it go? It's gotta be here somewhere." Carla ran her hands through her thick, curly hair and spun around, raking her eyes over her untidy bedroom. Normally her room was a lot neater than this, but after ten minutes of frantic searching, it was a bit of a mess. Carla opened her jewelry box for the fifth time, rummaging through every drawer, trying to find her necklace.
Carla whimpered as she closed the jewelry box, again, still finding no sign of her necklace. "Where is it? I know I had it yesterday." Collapsing back onto her bed, Carla gathered up her dark brown hair into a quick pony tail, then flopped flat on her back. She couldn't believe her necklace had gone missing; she wore it nearly every day and almost never took it off.
Last night had been her best friend's 25th birthday, and everyone got dressed up for the party, even though it was just a backyard affair. Carla had decided to wear a sleeveless deep blue dress with a low V-neck. It was fitted on top, then flared out gently at her hips, flowing nicely as she moved. To complement the blue, she had chosen to replace her usual golden chain and cross with a silver chain and a sapphire pendant. She had worn matching earrings and low silver heels, and had gotten compliments on her outfit all night.
She could have sworn that when she had taken off her cross that she put the chain in it's special box, but now she couldn't find it anywhere. It was very special to her, a reminder of all she believed in, and it took a lot of dedicated searching to actually find a cross she was happy with. The one she had found was perfect; the arms of the cross were made up of two delicately shaped leaves, with the bottom arm having a third leaf, and in the center was a tiny rose in full bloom, done in rose gold. It combined her love for nature, her faith in the universe, and her belief that there was a higher power up there, if not guiding things, then at least watching, and maybe giving a tiny nudge when needed.
Maybe it was silly to be so upset about misplacing a necklace, but it was her focal point; a reminder of all the good things when times got hard, and that nothing lasts forever. So much of her hope and wishes and faith went into that necklace that it felt almost alive. A tangible reminder that everything would be okay when she was anxious or upset or doubtful. Giving a big sigh, Carla heaved herself off the bed, planning to have one last look around before checking the rest of the house.
As she stood up, her foot caught in the pile of blankets on the floor and she pitched forward, just barely managing to get her arms up in time to stop herself from smashing her face on the floor. Carla took a moment to just breathe, recovering from the shock of falling and almost getting seriously injured. As she went to push herself up, she turned her head to the side and caught a glimpse of something shiny under her dresser. Reaching out, Carla slid herself over until she was able to grasp it and pull it towards her. Opening her hand, the brunet realized she was holding her necklace; it must have fallen down the back of her dresser in her haste to get ready.
With shaky hands, Carla fastened her necklace around her neck, breathing out a huge sigh of relief. "Thank the heavens I found it, I would have been lost with out it." Silently vowing to be more careful in the future, Carla got up and started straightening up the disaster zone that was her room.
