Bingo Fill: Solving Puzzles as a Team

This story fills the "Solving Puzzles as a Team" square on my 5x5 Mixed Card for the Valentine's Bingo Fest. It is an NCIS fanfic and the last fill in my blackout. I'm also still new at story-telling, so if there are any glaring errors or jarring moments, I apologize. And now, the story!

"Honing Skills"

Gathered around the table, seven heads are better than one. It's not often that they all get together outside of work, but every few months they take a day to gather and have some bonding time.

This time, Abby has chosen the activity and Team Gibbs is gathered around Ducky's dining room table, trying to solve a murder mystery. Underneath the noise of the teammates bandying around ideas, sounds of Fornell cooking dinner can be heard. Sometimes he joins in more directly but today he has opted to make the food and let the team enjoy the game while improving their cooperation and cohesion. And if he's secretly enjoying Gibbs' grimaces at the chaos around him, well, the lasagna won't tell anyone.

By the time the food is ready to serve, no less than ten theories have been thrown out, Ziva has been sent back to the start five times for rule violations, and DiNotzo looks unreasonably smug about being the one to correctly put together all the pieces of the murder. Miraculously, Gibbs has refrained from head-slapping anyone and Ducky somehow managed to turn the chaos into something resembling real team work.

Fornell had thought it was crazy the first time Gibbs had mentioned this exercise to him, but it actually works. The more puzzles they solve together in play, the better they work as a team, and the more success they have in the field. Fornell considers himself lucky to have been included, directly or not. Maybe one of these days he'll grow a pair big enough to suggest trying this with his team. After all, it wouldn't do to let Gibbs get too far ahead with his solve rates.
