I filled a prompt!
I filled my first prompt for NaNoWriMo! I'm not sure how many words it is yet, but it's a little over six journal pages long, and my rough estimate puts it at about 800 words. Not bad for writing at work! *GRIN*
All of my NaNo stuff will be original fiction, unless otherwise stated, but it's highly unlikely I'll write any fanfic; I don't think I could stay in character enough for that. I will also include a link at the end of every post so that you can check out the Bingo card I'm pulling inspiration from. So, without further ado, my first fic of November!
EDIT: This prompt is actually over 1,000 words!
Title: Hugs, Bob Ross, and Ice Cream
Prompt: Hugs
Word Count: 1,175
Rating: G (I think)
Warnings: Minor family drama (off screen)
Summary: Gen's day is off to a bad start, but comfort from a friend makes all the difference.
Notes: This isn't beta read, so I apologize for any mistakes, or if it makes no sense at all!
Hugs, Bob Ross, and Ice Cream
Genevieve was sitting on her couch, running her hands over her grey, fuzzy blanket, when the doorbell rang. Her ears perked up a bit at the sound, and she hurried to open the door.
"Sandy!" She exclaimed, throwing the door open and ushering him in. The brunet man stepped in, toeing his shoes off and pulling the door closed behind him. He looked at his best friend, taking in her bedraggled dark blonde hair, the way her hazel eyes flicked around, not settling on any one thing, and the way she was still absent-mindedly petting the blanket draped around her shoulders.
He took a step towards her and opened his arms. "Come here, Gen," he said softly, inviting her to take the hug he suspected she desperately needed.
Genevieve made a sound halfway between a sob and a laugh and threw herself into Sandy's waiting arms. "Oh Sandy, today has been awful, I'm so glad you're here." She held on tight, clinging to him and soaking in his heat.
Sandy held on a little tighter, content to stay right there for as long as Gen needed. When she finally started to loosen her grip a little, he wrapped an arm around her shoulder and guided her to the couch. "Let's sit down," he offered, "and we can cuddle while you tell me what went wrong. Or we can talk about anything else, or nothing at all. Whatever you want."
Gen followed easily, waiting for Sandy to sit down before cuddling up beside him. He tugged her a little closer, making sure she was comfortable, before reaching over to play with her hair. Gen sighed happily and snuggled in deeper before taking a deep breath and letting it out all at once.
"It was awful! I slept through my alarm, so I was half an hour late waking up. I forgot to pick out my clothes yesterday so I was rushing around in a panic, trying to find something acceptable for brunch with my family. Then I forgot my purse when I left the house, but didn't realize it until I was halfway to the restaurant and by the time I came back for it and finally made it to the restaurant, I was fifteen minutes late and everyone was annoyed, even if they didn't say so out loud. And if that wasn't bad enough, my mom and sister got into an argument about appropriate career choices, and my aunts spent most of the meal pestering about when I was finally going to find another boyfriend!"
Gen took a few ragged breaths before continuing more calmly, "I love them, I do, they just drive me nuts sometimes and today sucked. Thanks for listening." She tucked her face into his chest, embarrassed by her tirade and trying to hide.
Sandy pulled her into his lap, giving Gen a tight hug before going back to stroking her hair. "I'm sorry your day started off so poorly, I know how quickly little things can pile up and become huge things. I also know how irritating it can be, constantly getting questions about when you'll settle down and get a "real" relationship. Thankfully, I have nowhere else to be, and we can cuddle for as long as you want."
Gen nuzzled into Sandy, squeezing him tight, before reaching out and grabbing the remote. "Find something good?" she asked softly.
Sandy took the remote, turned on the TV and turned down the volume. After flipping through the channels and finding nothing suitable, he switched to skimming through Netflix. When he found the Bob Ross episodes, he put those on and set the volume at a level that was easy to hear yet still allowed for conversation.
After the second episode about painting "happy trees", Genevieve shifted to sit beside Sandy, so she could better see what was going on, though she still didn't break contact with him. As the third episode played, and Bob Ross claimed that anyone could paint, Gen laughed and said, "I'd never be able to paint like that, even if I followed along step by step."
Sandy gave her a small side hug and remarked, "I'm glad you're feeling a bit better. Is your day less awful now?"
"Ya, it is. You're the best Sandy, you always know how to make me feel better." Gen reached over to scratch his head, knowing he enjoyed it just as much as she did, and wanting to say thank you for being there for her. "When this episode is over, do you want to go and get ice cream? I can change out of this stupid floral top they didn't even like, and we can get blizzards from Dairy Queen then eat them in the park."
Sandy melted into the head scratches and just enjoyed them for a moment before responding. "Sure, ice cream sounds great Genevieve."
A thrill went through her at hearing him use her full name. To her, it was a sign that he was really enjoying what she was doing, since he only used her full name when he was being utterly serious or when was feeling so good that he forgot he was allowed to use nick names.
Growing up, his parents had refused to use short forms, always calling him Alexandros, no matter which nick name he asked them to use instead. They never let him use short forms with any of the family either, and they even refused to allow him and his friends to use nick names for each other in the house. Years and years of that had ingrained the rule in his brain, and he reverted back to that default when his brain was sufficiently melted.
Secretly, she loved it, even though she much preferred just "Gen", because it meant that she had made him feel really good.
As the episode drew to a close, Gen gave Sandy one more quick hug before popping off the couch and saying, "I'll be right back, then we can go get blizzards and go to the park."
Sandy smiled after her fondly, taking a moment to wonder what she was going to come out wearing, before shutting off the TV and getting up to put his shoes on.
When Gen came back into the living room, she was wearing a pink pleated skirt that stopped just short of her knees and a white t-shirt with lacy sleeves. She gave a quick twirl, causing her skirt to poof out around her and making herself giggle.
She slipped on her black ankle boots and opened the door, but stopped Sandy before he could walk out. "Hey," she said sincerely, "I really appreciate you stopping by. I always enjoy your company, and you always make me smile."
The dark haired man drew her into a hug and whispered, "Any time."
Gen gave him one last squeeze before stepping back and saying, "Let's go! Ice cream time!" As she locked the door behind them, she smiled to herself and thought, "This day isn't so awful after all."
