I got all the skills in the French tree to level 1! I now have the Golden Owl trophy on Duolingo! For French anyway; now I need to set about acquiring the others.


This is pretty much the highlight of my week. It hasn't been a bad one, just uneventful, and I'm really happy I leveled up all the skills!

Goals for next week: Work on my basket, do some edits, weed the garden. Maybe do a bit more house cleaning, and make a few crochet ruffle balls. (The one I made to test proof of concept turned out great! Thank you ysabetwordsmith for writing the poem where Shiv explains how to crochet the Christmas ornament!)

Go you! It's always nice to get things done ahead of time, and it sound like you had a very productive week. Hopefully it was because you were on a roll, and not because someone was breathing down your neck about moving up deadlines.

And that's all that matters. I figure if I can get a language to the point where someone else who speaks it (native tongue or not) can understand it, even if it's not perfect, I can refine it as I go. Heavens know I did enough of this working at Dairy Queen, trying to pick apart the different accents and kludges, trying to figure out what people were asking me.

(I got that reference, even though it isn't first hand knowledge. :)

Yay for you being good on the deadline; I also feel for the poor Network sods XD (Having a deadline and having to rejigger things sucks.)

*laughter* one of my biggest language skills is being able to suss out what a word means from context... "vendredi" baffed me for about three seconds, until I was like, wait, what's the last thing I... FRIDAY!

One damn minute, Admiral... I thought French was required learning in Canada? Or did you just suck at it on the first pass and decide to fix it?

Context is very helpful. And while my French may not really be serviceable, I do still remember the days of the week, and things like how to conjugate "avoir" and "être".

French is taught in grades 4 through 8 (though I was in the last class that got taught all the way from grade 1), and required in grade 9. Beyond that, it's optional. Now, I did take French all the way to the end of high school, but our school system kind of sucks at teaching second languages, and I probably couldn't have used it for much, even right when I graduated. I always wanted to be able to use it though, so I'm working on improving it.
