Fandom Snowflake: Challenge 3 AUs and Fusions

Challenge #3

In your own space, put some favorite characters into an AU, fuse some favorite canons together, talk about your favorite AU/fusion tropes, or tell us why AU/fusions aren’t your cup of tea. I don't create my own fanworks, so I don't have any AUs of my own, but I do enjoy reading them when others do it. It can be fun to see familiar characters in unfamiliar settings and see how that changes things. I've seen some really cool no powers-artist AUs with Steve and the Avengers cast. The only thing that bugs me is that sometimes the AUs aren't tagged very well, so I sometimes don't know which bits of canon have been kept; especially when some characters keep their abilities while others don't.

I'm not sure I have any favourite AUs or characters but I have probably read the most Marvelverse/Avengers AUs. I think the ones I like the best are the ones where Steve is some kind of artist as a career, or the ones where the characters are thrown into kinky things (there are a few really good BDSM AU type stories with Phil and Clint).

It can definitely be interesting to read stories about what superhero characters would do without their powers/duty to be a hero. It really involves taking into other aspects of their personality and interests. Even though I like Steve as Cap, artist!Steve can be fun too. I read a series where the Avengers were all in the food industry and Steve ran a food truck and that was really enjoyable.

I do quite enjoy Steve as Cap, but like you, I enjoy seeing artist! Steve too. I don't know if I've come across the food truck story before, but I do remember one where Bucky's parents left him a restaurant and Steve is the chef. That one was really good. There was also one with Steve as a tattoo artist that was a lot of fun to read too.

It's interesting what you point out about tagging. I suppose in some AUs you'll want to know beforehand which features have been kept - not only in order to decide if you want to read, but to have no preconceptions you'll need to change. And I can imagine that when a favourite character has no canon super powers, it can be lovely to focus on other aspects of the person. Thank you for sharing!

It is always interesting to see what parts of the personality and interest the author focuses on when the characters don't have their canon powers/jobs. I do like a little bit of a heads up in the beginning though, just so I don't spend the whole time wondering if Steve is big or tiny or how he got that way, or what kind of prosthetic Bucky has, if any and so on.
