Here is the poem for the WILD CARD square on the Public Activities Card for Fresh Starts Bingo Fest. I based it off a theme of "trying new things", and used no poetic form in particular. This is the final poem I wrote to get myself a blackout on the Activities public card, though I have written a few poems for the Life public card that I will try to post tomorrow. I may also write more fills for that card, if time permits.

Experiments

With the beginning of the year
comes a chance for something new:
To broaden your horizons
or pick an activity to do.

Try something different,
previously unexplored
or beef up your skills
in an area long ignored.

For me it was writing,
words the enemy
but then I discovered
the fun that is poetry!

Here is a Trenta-Sei for the "beginning a quest square" on the Public Activities Card for Fresh Starts Bingo Fest. This was a long and rather involved poem, but I'm happy with how it turned out.

Hunting for Knowledge
a trenta-sei

There was a young maiden
who lived by the lake.
She was told to stay hidden
for safety's sake.
Alas, she loved adventure
and so rejected all censure.

Who lived by the lake
but a scholarly elf.
Ze longed to study a drake
though was reluctant to set out by zerself.
One day ze met the maiden fair
and they set out together, an unlikely pair.

She was told to stay hidden
and ze preferred to be alone.
The lass didn't do as bidden
and ze decided knowledge was worth leaving zer house of stone.
The two gathered supplies and were soon mountain bound
for they had heard that was the most common place for a drake to be found.

For safety's sake
maiden and elf stuck close together.
They helped each other make
a most secure shelter.
Being prone to caution, the elf thought they should have a plan.
The maiden joined in with great reluctance as the brainstorming began.

Alas, she loved adventure
and with all the confidence of youth
she told her partner, bright-eyed and cocksure,
that she was heading out to find the truth
about whether drakes really hoarded gold
or if that was just a fairy tale of old.

And so rejected all censure
as the elf begged her to stay.
To zer preference the girl used to defer,
although she bid zer health and good luck as she went on her merry way.
As the elf watched the girl embark upon her quest,
ze used the time to rethink zer plan, and catch a little rest.

So, this Villanelle is for the "joining a team or club" square on the Public Activities Card for Fresh Starts Bingo Fest, and nominally takes place in the Polychrome Heroics universe created by [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith. You don't need to know much about that world to enjoy the poem, though it will help to know that SPOON (Super Power Organizational & Operational Nexus) is a mostly volunteer run organization that deals with people with super powers, with a heavy push for heroism. Kraken is a supervillain organization that does pretty well in making sure it's members are paid and happy, and have a way out if it's needed.

Full Moon Woes
a villanelle

I've heard many things about SPOON,
some good, some bad;
it's best not to decide to soon.

After a very strange full moon
I thought it best to see what options I had,
I've heard many things about SPOON.

My life is now a ruin
and for a support system, I'll be glad;
it's best not to decide too soon.

I'm not sure heroics is a boon
and I feared I've gone a touch mad;
I've heard many things about SPOON.

My soul for a mentor who won't swoon!
I'm beginning to think the black's not so bad,
it's best not to decide too soon.

Kraken sings such a different tune,
they make my feel a lot less sad.
I've heard many things about SPOON,
it's best not to decide too soon.

*one more note for those unfamiliar with this setting: Supervillains and other bad guys are said to be black hats or black capes, while superheroes and other good guys are white hats or white capes.

I have written a Clogyrnach for the "starting a novel" square on the Public Activities Card for Fresh Starts Bingo Fest.

The Mage's Tale
a clogyrnach

As the pen gets put to the page,
the characters take center stage.
I act as a guide
along for the ride;
out will stride
a new mage.

It is her story I must tell;
a novice outgrowing her shell,
depths not yet explored,
she has long grown bored
of her lord
and his dell.

And today's final fill is a Kyrielle for the "starting with nothing" square for the Public Activities Card for Fresh Starts Bingo Fest.

Making Do
a kyrielle

Whatever shall I do?
I want to make something new
but my stores are bare,
not a single part to spare.

The goal; a present for my crew.
It's time to think with care;
is it really true,
not a single part to spare?

Experience says, "Be creative, you."
Nature whispers too
of all the ways to eschew
"not a single part to spare."

I'm determined to see this through
and make the world aware
of all the great things that can be done with
not a single part to spare.

Here is a Spenserian for the "taking on a new role" square for the Public Activities Card for Fresh Starts Bingo Fest.

The Promotion
a spenserian

I started out on the bottom,
doing my work without a care,
but this most recent autumn
my opinions I was asked to share.
They said the promotion was fair,
that I had proved my value;
when this happened I'm not aware.
This change in role is new
but it sure is nice, having the boss listen to you.

So, for the "redecorating a room" square on the Public Activities Card for Fresh Starts Bingo Fest, I originally wrote a Lai, but after two versions I still wasn't very happy with it. After leaving it alone for awhile, I went back and wrote a Nonet for the square as well, that I like a lot better. I'm going to post them both here for you to see, and if anyone has any critiques or feedback (especially on the Lai), I'd be more than happy to hear them.

New Style
a lai

Pictures taken down
to be moved around.
New style,
modeled off a gown;
colours will abound.
A trial;
perfect balance found
'tween bright hues and brown,
it's final.

Changing Things Up
a nonet

It's springtime and change is in the air.
The curtains are looking tired
and the paint is wearing thin.
Swap plain brown for bright blue,
to let more light in.
Soft yellow walls
and new art;
it's a
start.

First, I got a blackout bingo on my Fresh Starts bingo card! Second, I managed to write 20 fills without getting a single line bingo (this wasn't on purpose at first, but after poem eight or nine it became deliberate). Third, here is the first of today's poems, a Roundabout for the "recycling/upcycling" square on the Public Activities Card for Fresh Starts Bingo Fest.

Renewal
a roundabout

Paper goes here, plastic goes there,
save whatever you can.
Could be food scarps
or cardboard flaps,
save whatever you can.

Saving the world starts with a plan;
donate the old things, perhaps?
Plastic to yarn,
worn socks to darn,
donate old things, perhaps.

Re-used items can fill in gaps
when new can't be called on.
Come, let us share
to show we care
when new can't be called on.

Resources gathered in the barn,
it's a renewal fair.
Look at the span
and load the van,
it's a renewal fair.

Here is an Acrostic poem for the "inventing" square on the Public Activities Card for Fresh Starts Bingo Fest.

INVENTION
an acrostic poem

Imagination is the first step.
Next comes ideas that turn into a plan.
Various things are tried before it comes out right,
Excitement when it finally works.
New things are so much fun to make
Though many steps happen behind the scenes,
Iterations never seen outside the shop,
Only the perfected piece being shown to the world before a
New idea strikes, and we're off again!

Writing this rondeau for the "starting a major project" square on the Public Activities Card for Fresh Starts Bingo Fest was a bit tricky, but I think I made it work.

Building Something Better
a rondeau

It's going to be a lot of work
but it's not something we can shirk.
If everyone will lend a hand,
the good will spread across the land.
Find not the downside, but the perk.

The wealthy and aloof we will irk;
our generosity they think a quirk,
but the middle class can withstand
a lot of work.

Too many souls are left to lurk
in the shadows, faced with fate's cruel smirk.
It's time to begin something grand,
reaching out to help without demand;
improving quality of life is worth
a lot of work.

Here is a Trimeric for the "launching a video channel" square on the Public Activities Card for Fresh Starts Bingo Fest.

Come Knit With Me
a trimeric

Just a little bit camera shy,
the first video is a little halting.
Hands steady as they knit,
voice stumbling every now and then.

The first video is a little halting,
not quite comfortable yet,
though that will come in time.

Hands steady as they knit
a simple stitch for the first scarf;
the bright yarn speaks for itself.

Voice stumbling every now and then,
not quite sure what to say
but looking forward to doing this again.

A Rispetto for the "building a house" square on the Public Activities Card for Fresh Starts Bingo Fest.

Welcome Home
a rispetto

First, the big machines dig a hole in the ground,
great mounds of dirt get piled in many bins;
concrete gets poured to make the base safe and sound.
The walls come next, pounding tools make quite the din.
The roof goes on, we are making progress now;
the electrical and plumbing are done, wow!
Paint goes on, the furnishings find their places.
Ready to move in, see the happy faces.

Number four is a Naani for the "making a discovery" square on the Public Activities Card for Fresh Starts Bingo Fest. It's a rather short poem that was nonetheless fun to write.

Joyful Discovery
a naani

Out for a walk
in the local park,
my eyes light up as I spot
a rabbit; stopped to nibble the grass.
fuzzyred: Me wearing my fuzzy red bathrobe. (Default)
Third today is a Tricube for the "taking a class" square on the Public Activities Card for Fresh Starts Bingo Fest.

Doing
a tricube

Settle down,
time to learn
something new.

First I show,
then you do.
Have a try!

Perfection
not a goal,
just have fun.

Here is a Nonet for the "planting a garden" square on the Public Activities Card for Fresh Starts Bingo Fest.

Growing
a nonet

Springtime is right around the corner,
the seeds are all ready to go.
It is time to spread new life,
plant it tenderly now.
As the rains come down,
the roots will grow.
Flowers soon;
wait-- then
bloom.

In an effort not to snow you all with a bunch of poems, I'm limiting myself to posting four a day. Don't worry, they will all get posted, I'm just trying to spread them out a bit. I have also gone back and added links to the forms I used in my poems so far, and will be doing so in all the future ones I post. Today's first fill is a Catena Ronda for the "hiking/biking a long trail" square on the Public Activities Card for Fresh Starts Bingo Fest.

Pedaling Along
a Catena Ronda

The pedals go round and round
as I bike along the trail.
In the sky I spot a quail;
the pedals go round and round.

As I bike along the trail
the trees flash past at speed,
pushing limits the challenge I need,
as I bike along the trail.

The trees flash past at speed,
but now I slow to breathe before
I increase my efforts once more,
the trees flash past at speed.

But now I slow to breathe before
I miss the joys of the forest as
I push my body to give all it has.
But now I slow to breathe before

I miss the joys of the forest as
the pedals go round and round.
It's time to head back to town,
I miss the joys of the forest as

the pedals go round and round.
As I bike along the trail,
in the sky I spot a quail;
the pedals go round and round.

I'm really liking using short poetic forms to fill my bingo card. The words seem to flow a lot easier when I'm not trying to craft a story or a plot. This one is a Magic 9 poem, for the "launching a new group" square on the Public Activities Card for Fresh Starts Bingo Fest.

Discussion Club
a Magic 9

Reading books
is much more fun
than it looks.
Pull up a chair
as we set our hook;
cookies and company
and a cozy nook.
Meetings Sunday at one,
we hope the bait was took!

Here is an anagrammatic poem for the "renovating a building" square on the Public Activities Card for Fresh Starts Bingo Fest. This was tricky to do, and is less structured and sensical than the other poems so far, but I think I managed okay. I did follow the example on the page about the poem, so while I stuck to only the letters in the title, I doubled them as needed, instead of sticking to *just* the 12 in the title.

Paintbrushes
an anagrammatic poem

Paint, brush, pan;
push the rubbish in the bin.
Brush taps, tan past,
paint trees here; better.

Sure start, renters tip,
"Trash here, bin there,
tint this, turn that."
Better, better than the past.

This is a Triversen for the "taking on a new responsibility" square on the Public Activities Card for Fresh Starts Bingo Fest. I'm not sure how well I followed the form, not sure if my lines are 2 to 4 feet each, but I'm happy with how it turned out, and proud that I managed to do something even close to what the form called for.

Loving You
a triversen

Welcome to my home,
I hope you'll like it here,
a place you can make your own.

You say you're different than the rest
but that's okay with me,
I will love you all the same.

I know this is new,
take all the time you need,
I'm not in any rush.

As your guardian,
I will do my best to
support you any way I can.

Sports or dresses,
wherever your interests lead,
I will be there.

A silent presence
always at your side
as you make your place in this life.

A Shadorma for the "beginning a blog or journal" square on the Public Activities Card for Fresh Starts Bingo Fest.

Release
a shadorma

The first word
written on the page
gives relief;
paves the way
for many more thoughts to come,
no longer confined.
