This week's discussion is going to involve kink, so if that's not your thing, you might want to skip this one.

In just about every fandom I read, I have come across at least one Alternate Universe (AU) story. There a lot of variety in the AUs; same setting but with magic/powers, same setting with no magic/powers, coffee shop AUs, college AUs, even outer space AUs.

I enjoy reading AU stories because they give you a chance to see familiar, characters in an unfamiliar setting. In my opinion, it allows for far more creativity because there is less canon to keep track of. If you change the setting, you don't have to worry about keeping as many canon details in tact. You can simply focus on staying true the characters; with the rest of it, your imagination can run wild.

One of the major drawbacks of AUs for me, especially with The Avengers, is that I'm never quite certain which bits of canon have been kept. If it is a "no powers" AU, I never know if Steve is big or small. Sometimes it says in the tags, sometimes not, and sometimes a description is given until much later in the story. And sometimes even when Steve is big, I'm not quite sure how he got that way. The history between the characters and how they all know each other is another thing that can be confusing, depending on how the story is done. It's even harder to sort out which bits of canon have been used when a story goes half and half, some people have their powers while others don't.

Overall though, I find the added creativity and different settings make AUs worth reading. Getting to see the characters in an unfamiliar place or time seems to allow for more development in the characters as people, which leads to a richer experience and an enhanced story. I think I like the "coffee shop" type AUs best, really any type of regular job setting seems to give the best look at who the character really is, underneath all the powers. You get to see what they would be like if they were just ordinary people. It's fun to see and not something that can really be done in canon.

Do you like reading AUs of your favourite fandoms? Do you have any AUs you really like, or really dislike? Is there a particular AU you would like to see your favourite characters in? Are there any major flaws you've seen in an AU story that ruined that story for you?

I hope you'll join me for a discussion today. Even if you don't want to, or can't, answer the questions, you are free to ask me about anything in my post, or just say hello. :) Enjoy your Saturday everyone!

I figured that since I named my journal "Fuzzyred's Marvel Reading Nook", I would make this week's post about Marvel. It is a giant fandom, and I like it a lot, so there will probably be many future Saturday posts about it as well.

I really enjoy reading stories about the Avengers, because there is a lot to explore. Canon gives a lot to work with, as well as leaving a lot of gaps or unsatisfying points that people want to fix. It allows for creative storytelling to take place and results in a great variety of stories to read.

My favourite pairing to read is probably Clint/Coulson, because I enjoy both of those characters a lot. I might also have a small competency kink and both of those guys are badass as f***. I like reading the stories where the author delves further into the many facets of their relationship and shows their growth. They are both far from perfect and it is nice to see where they came from and how they move forward from where they are now.

Do you have a favourite pairing in Marvel? Why do you like that pairing? What would you like to see more of for your pairing/the fandom in general? Are there any pairings you or types of stories you absolutely won't read?

Hi guys! Welcome to my first Saturday Fandom Discussion! I decided to start with an easy topic: my favourite fandoms. I read a lot of fanfiction and I tend to choose my stories based on content (usually kink) as opposed to fandom but I definitely have some favourites.

I think my most favourite, and the one I read most often, is the marvel fandom. Specifically the Avengers and the individual fandoms they come from (Iron Man, Captain America, etc.). I especially like reading Clint/Coulson stories since they seem to make a good team and Coulson is definitely a badass. Bucky/Steve is another favourite and it comes with a lot of variety. There are the stories where you see the process of Steve helping Bucky heal, seeing the damage that Hydra and being the Winter Soldier left behind, and then there are the stories that don't necessarily ignore the damage that must have happened but certainly it is down played and Bucky is mostly ok and happy. Both are different kinds of stories and both are fun to read.

Ensemble stories are another fun one for me. Watching everyone take care of each other and help each is great to see. I'm not picky about rating, I will read everything from Genfic to X-rated mostly pr0n things, though I'm finding more and more that I prefer at least some plot to my erotica. Do you read the Marvel fandom? Do you have a preferred pairing or type of story? Are there things missing from the fandom that you would like to see?

Harry Potter is another fandom that I read a lot of. My preferred pairing there is Harry/Severus, though that might just be because there is a lot of it. I do like the way that most fan writers write Severus and seeing Severus and Harry move from hate to friends or sometimes more. I also enjoy this pairing because they seem particularly well suited to kinky relationships. In truth, as long as the story is well written, there are many different groupings I like to read. I find it fascinating how fans take canon and extrapolate from it to create worlds and characters that they would like to see, either in the canon setting or with the canon characters in a different setting. Do you read Harry Potter fanfic? Do you have something particular you search for in this fandom? Are there any things from canon that you wish fanfic would change/fix?

Another of my preferred fandoms is the Musketeers fandom, based on the BBC show. I have only recently started watching the show but I greatly enjoy this fandom. In particular I like to read stories by Teland on AO3. Teland has a unique writing style that took me some time to get used to by I very much enjoy the plot in the stories. Thon has created a backstory about Porthos and Treville that I enjoy immensely. The stories do tend to be X-rated, so if that's not your thing, these might not be for you. If that is your thing, I strongly suggest you check it out. I enjoy this fandom because I enjoy the characters. They aren't flat or two-dimensional and there is a lot for fandom writers to work with in creating intriguing stories to read. Do you read works in this fandom? Have you read the book or watched the show? Do you have a favourite bit of canon or a favourite fanwork?

My last favourite fandom is the BBC version of Sherlock. I very much enjoy Bennedict Cumberbacth and Martin Freeman in their roles as Sherlock and John. Fanworks are a way for me to continue enjoying this dynamic outside of canon. There are so many interesting facets to the relationships between the Sherlock characters. I always enjoy seeing how creative people are in creating new and exciting stories to tell with characters I love.

Do you have a favourite fandom? What kinds of fanworks to you enjoy most? Do you create fanworks of your own? What is something you'd most like to see in fandom? Do you ever wish something from a fanwork was canon? If so, what is it?

I've shared a few things I like about fandom (hopefully in a way that makes sense). I'm very curious to know what other people get out of fanworks and what their favourite parts are. Feel free to answer as many or as few of my questions as you like. You can also ask me any questions you want or for clarification about anything I wrote. I'm also open to suggestions on how to improve if you found my post confusing or think there was something I could have done better.
