After answering the Snowflake Challenge about AUs, the idea of a SHIELD/NCIS crossover popped into my head, so I'm going to try to put that in words. I'm not sure how well it will go, but I want to give an attempt at writing it, and not just explain what the idea was. I will leave an AO3 style summary/tag cloud though, so that there is some idea of what you're getting into.

Summary: Coulson and Clint head to DC to see about recruiting a certain Special Agent.
Surveil and Recruit
"You want us to do what?" Clint asked.
"Head to DC and observe the investigation into Corporal Johnson's death," Fury said with an exasperated sigh. "Special Agent Gibbs makes a lot of higher ups antsy but he's damn good at his job and we might be able to use that. I want you and Coulson to go down there and tell me what you think."
With a sideways look at Coulson, Clint gave a shrug and said, "Sure thing Boss, when do we leave?"
----
"I still think Fury's out to lunch on this one, Boss." Clint was perched in a tree with a pair of binoculars, since Gibbs and the dead body happened to be in the middle of the woods. In the car tucked into an unobtrusive parking spot, Coulson sighed before responding.
"Fury has his reasons. Gibbs is a formidable investigator and his military background means he has the skills to fit in at SHIELD. Besides, while his ... creative interpretation of the rules causes problems when going through official channels, SHIELD has more leeway and we can always use more good agents."
Clint hummed in thought. "Do you really think he'd go for it though? We see some weird shit at SHIELD. And what would he be anyway? Agent? Handler? Gibbs doesn't seem like a man who fits in a neat little box."
Another sigh. "I don't know Clint. That's what we're here to find out. And does anyone at SHIELD fit into a neat little box?"
Clint gives a quiet snort and focuses back on observing closely again. "You've got a point there Boss."
----
In the woods, Agent Gibbs looked towards the trees for the fifth time, then shook his head and told himself to focus on the case. "Everything alright, boss?" DiNozzo asked quietly.
"Yeah, DiNozzo. I keep getting this feeling that we're being watched, but I don't see any signs."
"You want me to go check it out boss?"
"No, let's focus on the case. Just keep your eyes peeled in case things go hinky."
"Sure thing boss. Watch for anything hinky." DiNozzo's eyes twinkled, then he gave a grunt as the headslap connected. "Sorry boss. Focusing on the case boss."
With a sigh and an eye roll, Gibbs left DiNozzo collecting evidence and went to talk to the witness again.
----
Four days later, after Corporal Johnson's killer had been arrested, Gibbs walked up to the blue sedan just as Clint and Coulson were getting ready to head back to the airport. "Who are you and why have you been following my team for the last four days?" Gibbs asked.
Coulson stepped out of the car and showed his badge. "I'm Agent Coulson with the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, and that's my partner Clint. We've been in DC to watch you, actually."
Gibbs raised one skeptical eyebrow. "Me? What did I do to gain the attention of some obscure alphabet agency?"
Clint, who had climbed out of the car to hear better, gave a snort. "I told you he wouldn't be a good fit Boss."
Coulson gave Clint his "let me handle this look," then turned back to face Gibbs. "Well, Special Agent Gibbs, you make a lot of people in DC nervous and my boss thinks you'd be a better fit in our organization."
Gibbs gave Coulson and his suit a thorough once-over before scoffing and turning away. "Not looking for a new job. I've got a good team here and I do important work. Your shadow organization has nothing to offer me."
As he started to walk away, Coulson said in an even voice, "What about more freedom? Imagine being able to continue as an investigator, without all the red tape. SHIELD deals with the most unsavory criminals, so we have more ... leeway in how we deal with them. You can get justice without having to worry about keeping the suits in DC happy."
At that, Gibbs turned around to give Coulson a disbelieving look. "You think I actually care about keeping the suits happy? I play by my rules and I get the job done. Not interested in being anyone's puppet or pet assassin."
Clint laughed at Gibbs' statement. "We got plenty of assassins. You... You're the ghost in the night that takes down the bad guys that think they got away with it. The one who finds the rapist and child murderers and animal abusers and makes sure they pay. SHIELD can point you in the direction of the ones that slipped through the cracks and give you the means to deal with them, without losing your job or ending up in jail."
Clint's little speech made Gibbs stop and consider for a moment before he shook his head. "Tempting as that is, I've got a team here that needs me, that's depending on me. I can't just walk away from that to go chasing boogeymen in the shadows."
Nodding as if he knew that's what Gibbs' answer was going to be, Coulson stretched out his hand and offered a card. "If you ever change your mind Special Agent Gibbs, SHIELD will be there. Just ask to speak to me or Director Fury." Coulson waited for Gibbs to take the card and walk away before gesturing at Clint to get back in the car.
"Think he'll change his mind Boss?" Clint asked.
"Not soon. But I think once his team has flown the coup and don't need his constant guidance anymore, his thirst for justice -and vengeance- will still be there. And when he tires of being on NCIS' leash, I think there's a good chance he'll turn to us." Having said all he intended to say on the matter, Coulson started the car and headed for the airport, asking Clint about some of the crazier things he'd seen while watching Gibbs and his team.
----
"Well boss?" DiNozzo asked as Gibbs stepped out of the elevator and into the squad room.
"Well what DiNozzo?"
"Did you find out who was watching us? And why?"
"Some spooks from one of the shadow agencies. They were looking to recruit."
"Who, you, boss?" DiNozzo asked incredulously. At Gibbs' glare DiNozzo quickly back tracked. "Didn't mean to imply you weren't qualified boss, you would total kick ass, only the Agencies tend to be pretty uptight and you don't exactly follow the rules. What did you tell them?"
Gibbs rolled his eyes at DiNozzo's rambling but answered the question. "Told them I already got a job and a team, of course. I don't plan on leaving you guys any time soon."
"Good, that's good boss. I'm going to get started on my report now." As DiNozzo turned back to his desk, Gibbs took one last look at the card in his hand before slipping it into his pocket. NCIS was his home, and his team still needed him, but when they were ready to branch out on their own, maybe Gibbs would see what this SHIELD had to offer.

Date: 2022-01-15 11:36 pm (UTC)SHIELD deals in a lot of shadow work and tends to be morally ambiguous, and Gibbs has always read as an ethical grey hat to me, so I thought the two might fit together. Although Gibbs might not tolerate some of SHIELD's more questionable practices if he ever finds out about them.
