Bingo Fill: Interracial or Interspecies Love

This is poem fills the "Interracial or Interspecies Love" square on my Mixed Card for the Valentine's Bingo Fest. It can be read as a standalone but does involve the same characters introduced in "Lightning."

Flavours of Love

When people ask Alice if she's ever been in love,
she tells them she loves her horse Lightning with all her heart.
Most scoff and tell her that's not the same at all,
that one day she will find a person she loves more than Lightning,
but she knows this isn't true.

They always forget that there is more than just romantic or sexual love,
and that the other kinds are just as valid.
Alice knows, clear and true, that she would do anything to keep Lightning safe and happy,
and that Lightning would do the same for her.

Who needs a human life partner when you have a steadfast friend to ride the trails with,
who listens when you are sad, who adores being pet and even nuzzles back,
and who will spirit you away from danger, even as you make sure that danger can never come back.

As far as Alice is concerned, everyone else can have their human partners.
For Alice, Lightning is all she'll ever need.

*nods* life partners don't need to be romantic, or human, or even animate in the usual way. I mean, lookit several of the Star Trek captains. If they weren't married to their ship, I don't know what... some sailors used to say they were married to the Sea itself.

This makes a lot of sense. I think "society" spends too much time trying to squeeze everyone into the same small box, so those of that don't fit have a heck of a time trying to figure out *why*, and then where we *do* fit instead. I'm glad you liked this one. :)
