It can be a blessing and a curse,
to have ears that never turn off.
Not hearing better than others,
but hearing more,
rarely able to disengage.
This can be useful,
when wanting to hear all the conversations around;
it's not polite to listen in,
but the overactive ears support the innate curiosity
that always wants to know.
It can also be a hinderance,
when tired or overwhelmed;
Voices like so many magnets,
pulling at the attention like an eager child,
until you trail off mid-sentence, train of thought long lost.
It is a rare thing indeed that turns off that awareness,
shocking others when you are more alert than expected.
Hyperfocus does it best;
so consumed by your passion that all else fades away.
Delight in what you are reading and saying and doing
rendering everything else unimportant in this moment.
Pleasure is hit and miss,
body engaged and mind slowing down,
still all too often reacting to the outside world;
mellow and content, thoroughly immersed in the feelings,
and still able to chuckle at the shenanigans in the next room.
It can be a blessing and a curse,
to always hear the voices,
longing for a bit of silence that just never seems to come.
But for all the distraction and questions they engender,
these sensitive ears are mine.
They may be a blessing and a curse,
but I've gotten used to them perking up
at any little sound,
always interested in what's going on and what people have to say.
That awareness is part of me,
and while I might wish for a quiet moment or two,
silence is over-rated
and I'll keep my blessing and a curse.
