A sudden stratospheric warming has caused the polar vortex to collapse, sending a mass of cold air over the mid-latitudes.

Just like this time last year, 2026 is today lowest extent in the 47-8 year satellite record with volume also around record lows and temperatures remaining high. If it chases 2025's trajectory toward another record low maximum I guess that might indicate a possible structural shift in the freezing season in that winter 'recovery' may be weakening for the long term with a potential new baseline for the winter freeze? I guess we'll know the decadal trend for certain in another 0.5–1 decades.

two log cabins with snow on the roofs in a wintery forest the text snowflake challenge january 1 - 31 in white cursive text

Challenge #14: In your own space, create a promo and/or rec list for someone new to a fandom

I have had such great fun (and good luck!) with fandom primers in past Snowflakes, in the sense that I both really enjoyed writing them up, find them very useful to refer to down the road if I need to explain what obscure/hard-to-understand-from-osmosis thing I’m talking about, AND I think I have had at least one flister either directly take the plunge because of the primer each time or have it be a helping-along nudge towards that, which is really the best possible outcome. (Past primers: Dragaera, Terra Ignota, my 50-year-old Russian book love Monday Begins on Saturday, and Taskmaster, and I finally created a tag for them).

Last year the thought of doing one for Elis & John did occur to me, but I had only consumed one third of the “content” by then, and didn’t feel like I was ready to write any sort of primer. This year, I’m still not done catching up: I have listened to almost 9 years of radio out of 12 years, but that does mean I have about 25% to go. But, I do feel like 9 years of content is a lot of content, and I have now listened to at least some of all of the phases of their “digital decade”, and got to experience a live show, and E&J fandom on four different platforms, which hadn’t been the case last year, so I was thinking it was time. And then a 30k Elis & John fic popped up on AO3 the very day this Snowflake prompt went up, roughly doubling the total amount of E&J content on AO3, and if ever there was a sign from the universe, right? :P

So here you go. This is what I’ve been obsessed with for the last 20 months, to the extent of flying to England to attend a show.

What is it? Elis James and John Robins is a British radio show/podcast that has been on air almost-continuously in some form since February 2014. It started out on XFM/Radio X (“digital indie music radio”, as the boys rattle it off) as a live weekly radio show, moved to the BBC in 2019, as a live weekly radio show on 5Live, and in February 2024 changed to a “podcast-first” format, the exact mechanics of which are too complicated to explain (the show has adopted a sarcastic “it couldn’t be simpler!” tagline when attempting to explain it), but essentially it moved to two podcasts a week, with new episodes currently dropping Tuesdays and Fridays, and then the highlights of those go out on the radio once a week. The key thing is that across these last 12 years, with the exception of a couple of months when they were moving stations or formats, there’s been a steady output of 1-2 hours of new content a week, with occasional bonus special episodes, and all of that is available in podcast form. As of this writing, the BBC version of the show is up to 509 episodes, and there are 264 episodes on Radio X, plus a bunch of bonus ones that are unnumbered across both versions.

Elis and John have also written a book together, The Holy Vible, have done a bunch of livestreams over the years (not available officially anywhere, but there are curated sources), and have done live gigs and tours, most recently in the fall of 2025 (also not available anywhere, but there are clips, photos, etc.). You know, in case the 1000+ hours of radio/podcast content was not enough ‘canon’.

The premise: the key players and the chemistry )
the format )

OK, I think that gives a sense of the format sufficiently.

How to listen: The current BBC shows are on Spotify (and BBC Sounds, and Podbean, and all the other places). There is also bonus BBC Sounds-only content that is only officially available within the UK (but there are sources; inquire within). The Radio X/XFM shows are also available on Spotify, separately.

You can see visuals and video versions of short clips on the Instagram “carra” at bbc5live (probably easiest to search by the #elisandjohn tag.

And longer clips are on YouTube in this playlist.

Where to start: This is a great question! Opinions vary.

Two options that I think might work )

How to cope with broken resolutions and the mid-January slump

January is a difficult month for many people. We come in at the start full of excitement and hope, determined to accomplish our goals, only to find by the middle of the month, we have already failed to follow through on our resolutions. Add to that feeling of dejection days of minimal sunlight, and, for some, seasonal depression.

Yes, January can be tough. However, January can also be freeing and satisfying. As a person born in January, this month holds deep meaning for me, and I hope the ideas shared below serve you well in the coming weeks and beyond.

So I did try to get out of here. My hill is an ice floe but I got up there and the main highway is fine. BUT both counties are still on level 2 snow emergencies. Students are whining about it. I point to Canvas where I left them a message saying if you don't feel safe don't come. I'll put up a recording and you go suffer through that.

Rocket is being the best boy, finally using the damn litter box. Guess it got too cold to go pee outside. (He has only used that box a handful of times in 4 years. Today he walked in and did his business while I'm there like a good boy. He still wants out mind you but then he gets over it.

Another day of failing to clean (I have no energy today) but I made an eye appt, paid my membership dues for my pro organization, bought the work con and the hotel, contacted the steampunk con about their teacher discount, got the hotel for the loveland frogman festival in march (watch me get snowed into Loveland)

I did a bad thing. I took an Amazon prime trial membership because I HAD to spend the gift cards I got last work con and the items I wanted were over 50$ cheaper when I did that. Now to remember to cancel it in march.

What I Just Finished Reading:

A Curious Kind of Magic - I enjoyed this cozy mystery/fantasy thought the flawed main character did get on my nerves some times

Sugar and Vice - it was fairly fun

Sally Ride - I thought this was a YA book it was barely middle grade, more like 5-6th grade (I hate that my library system uses some reading level thing that means nothing to people who aren't parents. It's from the line that Chelsea Clinton started after the whole and yet she persisted dust up and it was nice for what it was.

What I am Currently Reading:

Zombie Day Care and something by Alison Bechdel about being superhuman. Oh joy an exercise memoir. Nearly done.

Luna Park history - it was an amusement park in Pittsburgh around 1910. Mostly interested because it feels like a place to set a story. I mean a lion escaped from it and ate a woman.

What I Plan to Read Next: La Grand Familia and some fantasy sapphic comic where chefs fight monsters...with giant forks. I know I know, the prompt is sapphic comic and this is the only one I haven't read yet at my library (I didn't like their other offerings enough to reread)

I'm seeking feedback on my book Within the Box right here on Dreamwidth, one chapter at a time.

It's 1982; Derek is a femme, one of the males who is more like one of the girls, what we'd call genderqueer nowadays but there was no word for it yet.

Derek's worried parents are putting him into a fancy rehab facility, the kind of place where high-end psychiatrists try to reprogram people — but this time the shrinks may be biting into more than they know how to chew.

I'm hoping people will read it and comment on it as I go. I'm hoping that if they like it, they'll spread the word.

When I get to the end, I'll start over with the first chapter, by which point I'll no doubt have made changes.

Congress: don't chicken out again

Constrained by the limits of the web form, this is what I sent Senator Fetterman on Sunday:

Senator,

In October, you joined Republicans to end a government shutdown without getting any meaningful concessions for the top issue at the time. Health care costs are out of control for ordinary people, and losing the subsidies made it worse. Now, another shutdown looms and there is an even bigger issue: ICE is out of control, using excessive force to kill citizens who posed no threat and to suppress lawful dissent. The Senate has an opportunity to strip DHS funding from the measure and fund everything else. This is important: if you roll over again, you will be complicit in Congress's failure to be a co-equal branch of government. You will let executive abuses, abuses that are KILLING PEOPLE, go unchecked. How many more people will they kill and how many more cities will they destroy if you fund them for the next eight months?

Congress has abdicated its duty to stand against authoritarian rule. You have a singular opportunity to push back. Please do not squander it again. It was bad enough when Congress's actions only endangered our finances and livelihoods; now you risk endangering our lives. Vote NO on DHS funding until it is held accountable and reforms.

Fetterman is afraid of government shutdowns, but he should be more concerned about unaccountable thugs.

Still Here...

Go Further Together

When you set a goal it’s best to buddy up! Rely on friends, or a community of people, to stay motivated and help you become your best self. Friends and networks, especially healthy ones, are good for motivation and accountability. Here are some practical tips for finding these people -– both near and far –- to help you achieve your goals.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

ACNH had a free update two weeks ago that added some new features to the game, and I've got to admit that I'm quite enjoying them. Considering it's an almost six-year-old game, I'm still a little surprised that they released such a big update after all this time, but I'm very much not complaining.

They've added a hotel which means you can have more visitors to your island every day, and they're all wandering around instead of staying in one spot like visitors who are at the campsite do. The only thing that I'm disappointed about is that there doesn't appear to be any way to get hotel visitors to move to your island like with campsite visitors, which made me very sad when Raymond showed up a few days ago. That said, I've discovered that former residents of your island remember you and talk about coming back to their old home for a visit, which is amazing. I'd forgotten that a few of them even used to live on my island until I saw them again.

I've currently put over 1000 hours into this game, which I quite honestly find hilarious. The four Dragon Age games beat that, as I've put around 1500 hours into them, but the four Mass Effect games are only around 980 hours and Baldur's Gate 3 is only around 820 hours. So far, at least. The way I'm going, it may be in the 900s at least before my birthday next month.

Considering this was my very first Animal Crossing game, I really can't believe that it's second only to Dragon Age when it comes to my hours played. I only bought it because one of the players in my Friday night D&D game made an impassioned argument to convince us all to get it so that we could play together during the early days of the pandemic. Yet here I am, almost six years later, still playing it regularly.

Continued liveblog as I read Seven Seas’ new print edition of PSOH, and make sporadic comparisons to the original Tokyopop translation.

I’m posting the individual reactions on Mastodon and Bluesky, then rounding them up in the blog. Previous roundups in my PSOH fandom tag. You can pick up the books with my affiliate links here. (I now have Collector’s Edition 1-4 on my shelf!)

Only 2 chapters this post. I got a little long-winded. It’ll probably happen again.

I don't seem to have made a list of my acquisitions this year for either my birthday or Xmas! ...Perhaps it's because I was so spectacularly underwhelmed 😓

One cool thing that I got was a gift card for a month's full membership at a local, uh. Fabrication place?

Right. So. You know how a bunch of crafts can require specific, really complicated and expensive machinery that a given person may not have the room or money to buy for themselves? Well, this facility is dedicated to housing a lot of that machinery for use by local crafters. Things like woodworking stuff, sewing machines, ceramics wheels and a kiln, a 3D printer, etc.

Anyway, I finally got around to activating my membership and signing up for classes, and my first class is tonight! I wanted to take the ceramics intro class (required to use the ceramics space), but those have been booked up for a while, so I've been out of luck. I did at least find some classes that interest me, and I look forward to learning more stuff for when I might extend my membership in the future.

First class: "Basic Jewelry Hand Tools"
Upcoming classes: "Basic 3D Printing", "Basic Cricut", "Basic Electronics", and "Basic Sewing Machines".
