Bingo Fill: A Girl and Her Horse
Feb. 23rd, 2022 08:44 pmThis poem is a fill for the "A girl and her horse" square on my Mixed Card for the Valentine's Fest.
Small warning: This gets a little sad in the last paragraph, but overall it is a happy poem. Pet owners may want to take special care when reading though.
Lightning
Alice doesn't need a man, because she has Lightning.
She doesn't need a woman either, but thanks for askibg.
Alice has Lightning, and together they ride all the trails.
Sure Alice likes human company, but Lightning is all she needs.
Sex and romance have never interested her;
the few close friendships she has are deeply satisfying in a way few understand.
When people ask if she plans on settling down,
she just pats Lightning's flank and replies, "I am settled."
This leads to many baffled looks:
Most from the non-riders, some from the weekend dabblers,
and even a few from the die hard riders, but the true horse lovers understand.
Perhaps not to the same extent
but they know the deep, unending love that can form between horse and rider.
And when she tells them Lightning is all she needs,
they nod in acceptance and stop asking about dates,
switching instead to ask about the next trail ride, the next new skill to acquire.
Down the road, when Lightning begins to age, they ask about her plans,
and check to make sure she has the support
to mend her heart when it inevitably breaks.
There will be no replacing Lightning, but in time,
there will be a new horse to capture her heart and join Lightning in being
Everything she needs.
