I'm going to try a thing! I know I'm late to the party but after reading Ysabet's post about NaNoWriMo, I am inspired to try writing a thing. I have no idea what this thing will be yet but I figure I will start small. I'm going to try to develop a setting, some character profiles and an outline or at least a plot of some sort, lol. It definitely will not be novel length (probably ever) since it will be my first attempt at writing something, but maybe I can get a couple thousand words and a complete story out of this.
To everyone else who is participating, good luck! I know you can do this!
As a side note, if you need cheerleaders, proof readers, or just someone to rant to, I can do all of these things. Stay sane people, and have fun! :D

>> I like to tell stories in my head and I have a world there that I've been using but I'm notoriously bad at fleshing out the details and tend to do a lot of hand waving. Also, since I don't uusually write things down, sometines I forget things.<<
Okay, the basic rule is: only make what you need. So it varies. For casual worldbuilding (i.e. one short story) you don't need to write down much if anything. But if you're going to use that material repeatedly over time, you need to write it down so you don't forget and can keep details straight.
You don't have to use it immediately. When I started Polychrome Heroics, I made a few dozen characters to get a feel for the place. I have since used most of that batch and made many more, but I really needed a good sampling to understand how superpowers work there.
As a corollary, make what you enjoy. I like worldbuilding the way some people like building model ships. I have made whole ecosystems for entertainment. I've made languages. I've written down television commercials and children's books from other worlds. Why not? It's fun.

The easy way is to start with a "normal" world and then change only the things you need to (e.g. subtract modern technology, add magic). The more challenging way is to start from scratch (Bard Bloom's World Tree) or at least somewhat farther down the stack (my nether-Earth in the Steamsmith with its alchemical physics).

Date: 2018-11-11 11:57 pm (UTC)I was going to try to keep my first project small, but I'm pretty sure the story I want to tell is not a small one. Nothing like jumping right in the deep end. Good thing I know how to swim :p
